The art of documentary

Following the success of last year’s documentary film season Voyages, a number of European cultural institutes and embassies in London and the European Commission Representation in the UK are joining forces again to showcase European art documentaries over three weeks in London.

Twenty-two films will be screened under the title ‘What’s Art Doc?’ between 18 November and 8 December at venues such as the ICA, Curzon Soho, Institut Français, Goethe-Institut, Hungarian Cultural Centre and Instituto Cervantes.

The season opens with Screaming Men, about a choir from the wilds of Northern Finland who combine a punk sensibility with the conservative ‘suit and tie’ look of traditional male choirs. It closes on 8 December with two films VSPRS Show and Tell and Les Ballets C. de la B, about the Belgian choreographer Alain Platel and his controversial dance company. The film will be introduced by Platel and director Sophie Fiennes (The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema).

Other highlights include The Bug Trainer, a profile of the pioneering Lithuanian-born animator Ladislas Starewitch, whose surreal films influenced animators including Jan Svankmajer, Walerian Borowczyk and the Quay Brothers.

The German documentary Addicted to Acting is about the passage of four drama students through acting school, while Occupation Arne focusses on Slovenian photojournalist Arne Hodalic, followed by a discussion with the photographer himself.
