![]() | A campaign to raise £1m to restore the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, London, is gathering momentum. Urgent building works are needed on the 1910 auditorium and the interior and exterior Art Deco features from the 1930s. In addition, what is currently office space on the first floor will be converted into a café-bar. The new space will feature a terrace at the front of the building overlooking the high street. The total cost of the project is £1.05m. An application has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund for 56% of the total and Phoenix has already raised 40% of the remainder through donations from organisations and individuals. The Phoenix is now opening up the campaign to the public in an effort to raise the additional £280k. Chief executive Paul Homer said, “Our centenary gives us the opportunity to ensure that the cinema is viable for the next generation of film goers. In the last 98 years over five million people have seen the history of cinema in this building. We want to ensure that generations hence can see the future of cinema here. The project will enhance the facilities available and make certain we are able to continue delivering thoughtful film programming on behalf of the people of north London.” | ![]() | ||||||||
