He has worked extensively from 2007 with Mastercard, Visa and American Express to progress Payment Card Transaction models that could be deployed in London.

He previously worked with TfL on the specification, design assurance and implementation of the London Oyster smartcard system as the Systems Integration Manager for 9 years.

Mike Cowen is one of the payments industry's leading experts in the field of transit fare collection, with experience gained through direct involvement in complex transit projects including TfL's Future Ticketing Project. Mike has worked continuously with TfL throughout the entire lifecycle of the project from its conception in 2006 through to its imminent public launch in 2012.

Mike joined MasterCard in 2000. He has managed the Mondex Electronic Cash product, championed chip technology in the Asia Pacific region and forged new relationships across the public transport sector. In 2005 he was the Product Manager responsible for the TaiwanMoney card - the world's first deployment of contactless EMV technology. He has been instrumental in transit projects across the world from South Africa and Australia to France and the UK.

Mike's previous experience includes ten years in the electronic security industry, where he specialised in access control and identification technologies. He began his career in the industry as a systems engineer, later moving into sales and then product management.

Richard Watts is Rail Projects Manager for Lancashire County Council. He has been in post since 1990 and during that time has been involved in a range of projects with the railway industry. In 1994 he helped restore train services between Blackburn and Clitheroe which saw the opening of three new stations and the refurbishment of Clitheroe. In 2000 he led the project that saw the development of the award winning Clitheroe Interchange. This was soon followed by other rural interchanges at Carnforth (2002) and Burscough Bridge (2005). Prior to this he was responsible for the re-opening of Euxton Balshaw Lane station on the West Coast Main Line and is now involved in the construction of the new Buckshaw Parkway station on the main Preston to Manchester line.

Over the years he has been responsible for many station refurbishments including Colne, Brierfield, Bamber Bridge, Burscough Junction, Parbold and Ormskirk. The latter was one of the first National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP) projects to be completed and involved the total refurbishment of the grade 2 listed building. Recently he completed the Accrington Eco Station project that has received substantial European funding through the Interreg IVB SusStations (Sustainable Stations) project. The Accrington project sets new standards in the design, construction and operation of station buildings and this demonstration project will set new standards for station construction across Europe.

In addition, he manages five Community Rail Partnerships covering seven lines. Of these, three have been formally designated as community rail lines or services by the DfT. A further line is being considered for designation.

Future projects include Leyland Station on West Coast Main Line and Burnley Manchester Road as an integral part of the plan to reintroduce a direct Accrington/Burnley to Manchester rail service.

This provides London's bus passengers with on-board RTPI, bus operators with improved service control and provides London Buses with performance reporting and monitoring each of which assists London Buses deliver a more accessible, reliable and consistent bus service.

He is now managing teams responsible for the operation of London Buses Intelligent Transport Systems including Countdown, that provides real time bus arrival information for 19,000 stops, a 8000 plus mobile unit PMR system, Airwave and the syndication of TfL data to the developer community.

Between 2001 and 2006, Simon worked for Anite PLC, a UK based FTSE-250 PLC starting as Services Director before running the Company's Document Management software and managed services business. Prior to this Simon had a fifteen year career with leading UK Software & Services company Fujitsu/ICL culminating as the General manager for their Local Government Software business.

Tom Steinberg is the founder and director of mySociety, a non-profit, open source organisation that runs many of the best-known democracy websites in the UK. These include the Parliamentary transparency website TheyWorkForYou, Freedom of Information hub WhatDoTheyKnow, and the self-explanatory FixMyStreet.

By trade Tom was a hybrid policy analyst and sysadmin who mainly cut his teeth at the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit from 2001 to 2003. He grew up in Oxford, and now lives in Staffordshire.

He has also advised governments and parties across a spectrum of countries, and a range of ideological positions. He believes that good digital government services, usable community tools and powerful transparency sites are not the preserve of any one pre-internet political ideology.

In 2007 he co-authored the The Power of Information Review with Ed Mayo and the Strategy Unit, and is now a member of the UK government's Public Sector Transparency Board. He's also proud to be an advisor to Code For America.

Every day, 24 million trips are made on TfL's network, and most of these involve travel through one or more of London's 624 multi-modal transport interchanges. John's job is to make these interchanges better places to live, work, play and travel through, thus helping improve quality of life for transport customers and local communities. He is also leading a programme to deliver better customer service through co-ordinated management of interchanges across London.

John has accrued 30 years experience in the management of major infrastructure programmes and projects, mostly in London, including London Underground's Jubilee Line Extension and Train Identification & Management Information System projects, Network Rail's Thameslink and Train Control System projects, Crossrail, and Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail Access.

Peter Warman has worked with public transport operators and authorities on the development of their systems and services for 40 years. He received London Transport's backing to test the concept of providing 'Real Time Countdown Information' at bus stops in 1971 with a live on-street experiment. In 1981 he published that bus passengers would eventually use their mobile phones to receive real time bus stop information. As Chief Executive of the London Riverbus Service in 1989, he introduced a real time control and information system. When London's first bus route (service 18) introduced real time information in 1992, he managed the research programme to evaluate its impact on passenger behaviour. Today, with his advisory role to Trueform Engineering, he has a link with the London Countdown System as a further 2,300 electronic displays are being installed across the Capital, half of which are provided and maintained by Trueform along with all the bus stops in London. He also advises FWT and Hogia on new product developments for the UK. His continuing interest and understanding of travel behaviour enables him to identify how to apply technology to improve transport operations and enhance the experience of the passenger.

Dr Juliet Jain is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Transport and Society, UWE, Bristol, and has an academic background is in the social sciences. She worked on the EPSRC funded research 'Travel Time Use in the Information Age' which utilized quantitative and qualitative methodologies to investigate how people use their travel time, and the travel experience. She has continued this strand of research through PhD supervision looking at bus travel, and recently convened a multi-disciplinary symposium on the topic of travel time. Other research interests include the shaping of transport futures, and walking and cycling.

She developed and managed the Sustainable Development Charter at UITP until last year (2011) and has recently joined TRL (August 2011) where she will focus on climate change and transport (mitigation and adaptation), low carbon mobility strategies and deepening TRL's knowledge and skills in rail and public transport. She has a wide international experience of all aspects of urban transport and sustainable cities. She has recently been the public transport expert on the steering committee for a major international research study on low carbon transport 2050. Her international network includes and work experience includes being a member of the TRB (National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board) Committee for Developing Countries. She has given input into many technical reports for example ITDP Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide (2007), TEEMP methodology for calculating GHG emissions from transport and is a founding member of the SLOCAT partnership (a type II UN partnership between 50 international organisations promoting low carbon, sustainable transport) and is a founding member of the international initiative entitled Bridging the Gap (with international technical cooperation agencies, research institutes and the private sector to focus on the issue of transport and climate change and to better consolidate transport activities at UNFCCC Climate Change meetings. She is also an experienced trainer on sustainability and transport.

Transport for London

Nick is an earth scientist and MBA with over 20 years in the IT technology industry with Fujitsu/ICL and Nokia before running his own system consultancy as an Autonomy partner. He designed and built one of the UK’s first vehicle tracking systems for West Midlands Passenger Transport; he developed a branch vehicle hire system for Eurodollar; and he was instrumental in Fujitsu setting up the travel business in Asia where they won major scheduling systems contracts with Malaysian Airlines and Cathay Pacific. Nick has led the Elephant & Castle programme for TfL over the last 4 years – as an innovator he has looked at how ICT could be used to meet a requirement for data for transport planning and modelling, and how the same near real-time data could be used as input for customer behaviour change and operational management systems.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

John Welsman is Transport Policy Officer for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (Guide Dogs). As a blind person and a guide dog owner, John knows first-hand the challenges and issues that other visually impaired people face with travel and transport.

With a background in working with organisations which support blind and partially-sighted people, John works on behalf of Guide Dogs to position travel and transport in the wider context of the issues faced by visually impaired people in their daily lives.

John has worked for a wide variety of other organisations, including the Royal National Institute of the Blind; the BBC; Surrey Association for the Visually Impaired; Surrey Coalition of Disabled People and Surrey County Council.

After graduating from Aston University with a transport degree, Robin worked for Leicestershire County Council during bus deregulation. Next stop was Midland Fox before that became part of Arriva. For 10 years he worked in bus operations, marketing and as Commercial Manager in the East Midlands.

Next move in 1998 was to become Marketing Manager and then Director of Investment with Leicestershire Promotions. Here Robin developed marketing and investor skills crucial in forming Go Travel Solutions. This was established in 2008 as a specialist sustainable travel consultancy. 2011 clients have included Arriva, Hab, Transport for London and Volkswagen Group.

As well as a passion for sustainable travel, he has a love of Yorkshire and the affliction of supporting Bradford City! Married with three children, one of which is 8 year old Sam, the Director of Fun for the National Railway Museum!

John Henkel has worked at Metro (West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive) since 1995 and became Director of Passenger Services in June 2001.

As Director of Passenger Services he is responsible for Metro's wide range of customer services as well as its role in local bus services, including concessionary travel arrangements.

Metro has been very successful in recent years, being a Beacon Authority for better Local Public Transport, four times winner of the National Transport Awards 'PTA of the Year' honour and winner of other national awards. Metro also features in the Guardian Newspaper’s Top 100 Employers listing for 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Stuart is Barclaycard's Global Payment Acceptance Senior Product Manager with responsibility for the Transport and Transit sector. As a professional Programme Manager, Stuart has worked in financial services for over 20 years. The majority of that time he has been managing major change programmes, most notably the launch and rollout of contactless and Barclaycard Freedom, Barclaycard's innovative rewards programme. He is now responsible for the development of Barclaycard's support for Transit and is working closely with Transport for London on their Future Ticketing Project, as well as a number of other operators.

Muna Hamdi is an Independent Intelligent Systems consultant with particular focus on Real-Time Dynamic Applications; leading a career that is mainly focused on investigating methods that can be applied to optimise, control and solve real-world problems; in industry, commerce and public services. Working for projects that aim for better quality of life, increasing productivity and profits, by automating systems to work reliably at all times under variety of conditions.

Currently, Muna is working on solving transport problems by forming a Road-Map to the future vision of Transport. Her focus is on transport systems integration and multimodal travel. With this goal in mind, Muna founded IMobility: FutureVision Group, where she started building the means that would allow this vision to come true.

In additional to her involvement with transport innovation in UK, Muna is the Director of Research at ITS Arab responsible of the research development and knowledge transfer programme. Muna believes that The Middle East and North Africa act as a 'Green Field' with respect to transport systems, offering a unique opportunity to implement the ITS future model of - 'Seamless Travel' Her is focusing on developing ITS research projects involving private and governmental sectors, in collaboration with national, international research and funding bodies, to:

1. Build awareness of ITS and ITS research and its importance to the region.
2. Establish ITS regional requirement that are aligned with both regional governmental policies and other transport associated authorities and organizations.
3. Identify synergies between the EU and the regional research projects
4. Knowledge Transfer and training to encourage interested parties to participate in the development of ITS research projects that will benefit the MPC and the MENA region in general.
