PHIL JONES ASSOCIATES & Transport Initiatives

Phil Jones Associates (PJA) is an established transport planning consultancy formed in 2003 by Phil Jones, Managing Director, who has now been joined by a strong senior team of Directors/Technical Directors, and supported by a committed team of transport professionals.   The overall company now numbers over 50 people and is continuing to grow, making us one of the largest independent transport planning firms in the UK.

We currently operate from offices in Birmingham, London, Reading, Bristol and Exeter and with further expansion planned.  PJA has a strong design ethos, working closely with a range of fellow professionals including architects, urban designers and landscape architects.

Our core business is the analysis of travel demands and the planning of transport infrastructure for new developments, and we are now working on numerous large schemes involving thousands of homes.  We are also well known for our industry-leading street design capabilities, blending transport planning and urban design, together with training and research work.

Transport Initiatives is an independent consultancy, formed in 2005 but with many years’ previous experience. Our team of highly experienced transport planning professionals have a strong in-depth knowledge of sustainable transport in general, particularly cycling, walking and travel planning. We specialise in innovative ways of developing and promoting sustainable transport options, covering every step from transport strategies to managing implementation, and have worked on many cycling and transport projects for a wide range of local authorities and the private sector.

Although all of TI’s members cycle regularly, we don’t just focus on the needs of existing cyclists and have a strong understanding of the barriers and concerns which deter more people from cycling. An example of this is our work on cycling audits and network planning. This includes our Cycle Skills Network Audit process which assesses the road/path network in terms of Bikeability levels showing the real level of cycle accessibility across an area, and has just been endorsed in the guidance for Local Cycling & Walking Infrastructure Plans.
